Since the days of Napster and online piracy, music has been an industry in constant flux due to disruptive technology. While online piracy was a near industry-killer, more recent macro developments – such as affordable home recording equipment, social media, and music streaming services like Spotify – have favored the industry, and even more so, independent creators. In 2020, independent artists and labels saw revenue growth of 27% from the previous year, compared to an overall market growth rate of 7%.
There are more music makers today than ever forging a new path: rather than working with big labels or paying for massive recording studios, they’re doing it all themselves, oftentimes from home. And while a vast digital toolset exists to aid them in the process, the majority of it falls short for one of two reasons. It’s either not designed for a creative’s workflow, or it is just a small piece of an overly fragmented music tech landscape that quickly becomes dizzying to manage and, even worse, expensive.
boombox was born to give music makers dedicated space for their workflow. It provides a purpose-built toolset designed specifically for musicians. That includes ways for artists to store and share project files like Dropbox, collaborate like GitHub, connect like LinkedIn, and eventually even earn revenue from their art. It’s being built by engineers with music theory backgrounds and championed by early adopters who are helping shape the future of the platform. We sat down with India Lossman, co-founder of boombox, to talk about customer acquisition, the importance of user feedback, and how AI is less of a bogeyman for independent creators and more so a tool that can help empower artists.
1. jsd: boombox is unique among super{set} portfolio companies in that it is B2C. What is boombox’s strategy for acquiring users and how does it grow, connect, and engage with its user base?
India: We may be unique among super{set} portfolio companies in another way, too. We don’t have a sales staff. Instead, our company utilizes scaled performance marketing strategies to drive customer acquisition. The users driven through those channels provide feedback on which features are missing in the product, as well as which they find the most useful. That not only helps us fine-tune our product roadmap, but also our marketing messaging and core value propositions.
Speaking to our users is key to our approach. Initially, we focused on producers for feedback and product direction. The theory was that they would drive the technology decisions with their collaborators. The volume and breadth of their experience would offer great feedback. They would champion the product and lead their clients to the platform. As we moved from beta to GA, that theory paid off. Our focus groups and early adopters were sound engineers and producers working with clients, and they shaped the initial prioritization of must-have features on the platform.
Some of the specific feedback we received includes that communicating back and forth among collaborators has to be as easy as texting. That led to timestamped audio and text comments with notifications. A request for a great player and the ability to control the sequence of songs that are shared led to the development of playlists. When a producer told us you have to offer sync across multiple devices, boombox sync for macOS was born.
2. jsd: Tell me about the role of customer feedback in growing and evolving boombox’s platform and offerings community. What unique strategies have you implemented to foster customer collaboration?
India: We regularly spin up small focus groups with a handful of artists who are not on our platform, who haven’t heard of boombox yet, and ideally are not ready to fully adopt the product. We always want fresh eyes on the product and as many perspectives and roles as possible to provide feedback and direction on what can improve as well as what currently stands in the way of their full adoption of the product.
A focus group will work with us actively for about a month. They ask questions and provide feedback along the way. They know that we care about their journey and experience; more importantly, they know that we are going to act to resolve their pain points. Over the course of those weeks, they will identify impediments and improvements that we address immediately. That’s rewarding for the focus group and all of the boombox community: real-time collaboration that yields appreciable improvements. Small tweaks and finishing touches are critical to the customer experience. Some of the specific focus group feedback we received led us to develop visual cues, comment indicators, and paths to complete tasks in fewer clicks.
Artists who participate in the focus groups stick with us. They go on to participate in our community on Discord, we’ve featured them in podcasts and events, and most importantly they are a reliable source of feedback for anything new we’re cooking up later on.
We are loyal to our focus group participants, and they are loyal to us. Professionals that we’ve recruited to work with us for marketing have helped expand the customer base and contributed to the product roadmap.
For example, we heard from a couple of different focus groups earlier in the year that producers were having a lot of friction getting their clients to create an account in order to collaborate on boombox (i.e. to access files, add feedback, etc.). That’s when we realized that we needed to urgently prioritize open sharing via links to files and playlists that did not require an account in order to access. We’re also currently receiving feedback on plans & pricing: our focus group participants are asking for different storage tiers and different price points to make paid plans more compelling as a replacement for competitor tools.
3. jsd: How is boombox’s approach to customer acquisition and platform evolution different from the process at other larger tech companies where you’ve worked in the past? What surprised you about co-founding using the super{set} philosophy and model?
India: The main difference from my perspective is that unlike larger, enterprise companies that I worked for in the past, everyone at boombox is close to our artists. Everyone on the team regularly talks to customers and potential customers. Customer outreach and follow-up are part of our DNA. Artists welcome it and appreciate it, so the feedback keeps flowing.
It’s those unexpected touch points that make this work so compelling to me as a founder and rewarding to our customers. And I think that carries on the larger philosophy of super{set} portfolio companies. We are solving real pain points for real people in real-world situations. In this case, it’s the music industry. I’m not a musician myself, but I bring empathy for their hustle while also bringing technical experience to the table.
4. jsd: Artificial intelligence is everywhere, including in music. How does boombox leverage data and AI to support its customers and how has customer input been essential to building out features like the boombot?
India: Generative AI poses some interesting opportunities for creators. As that technology evolves, boombox is working to integrate it as a tool to empower artists to open new avenues for creativity. Currently, boombot has a way to generate chord structures from a ChatGPT-style interface. In the future, we’re looking at gen AI to assist with sample and loop generation that artists currently leverage large libraries for (like Splice). It can take hours to parse through those libraries to find what you’re looking for. We believe gen AI can save some time and give music makers something novel and appropriate in a fraction of that time.
AI can also help with the more mundane parts of the creative process. There are loads of steps on the road to releasing a track that are extremely left-brained and monotonous. For instance, adding all of the metadata to an audio file needed prior to distributing through DSPs like Spotify and Apple Music can be time-consuming. So if we can leverage an AI tool to help save an artist 30-45 minutes of time spent on data entry, we’re going to do it.
5. jsd: How is boombox diversifying the music industry?
India: Creating and distributing music used to require renting studios, expensive recording equipment, and professional teams to network with industry players. Similar to how remote work allows companies to benefit from talent from any place - and people can find jobs that don't exist locally to them - we hope boombox will catalyze and nurture collaboration across regions, backgrounds, and genres. We want to empower DIY musicians and be an essential part of their journey.
